Bapu Nadkarni Biography

Bapu Nadkarni is a former Indian cricketer from Nasik mainly known for being an economical bowler. He has played 41 test matches for team India taking 88 wickets, and used to bowl in slow left arm orthodox. He was a left handed batsman too. He has taken 5 wickets in an innings 4 times in his international career, which includes 10 wickets in a match once. His bowling average was only 29.07. He has played 191 first class matches completing 500 wickets. He played as an all-rounder to his team.

 

Bapu has also contributed as a batsman to his team and has scored a total of 1414 international test runs which include a century and 7 half centuries. 122 not out is his highest score in international test career for team India. In test cricket he has scored a total of 8,880 runs with a batting average of 40.36. His batting average in test cricket is 25.70 in 41 matches.

 

Bapu Nadkarni was born on 4 April 1933 in Nashik, Bombay Presidency, British India. His professional career began in 1950 after Indian independence with Rohinton Baria Trophy for Pune University in 1950-51. He played domestic cricket for Maharashtra since 1952, and scored his first century two years later against Bombay. In that innings he scored 103 not out in the unexpected 10th wicket partnership with Sadashiv Patil. From there on, a new era was born.

 

During his peak years he attracted crowds because of his bowling spells. He once bowled 21 consecutive maiden Overs In a Test Match, thus entering his name in the history books of Indian cricket. It happened in the first Test against England in Madras on January 12, 1964. This record is yet to be broken, even after 55 years, perhaps won’t be broken.
