Shikha Joshi Biography

Shikha Joshi was a character artist of Bollywood best known for her role in the 2013 Hindi film B.A. Pass. However she died in a suicide attempt on 16 May 2015, aged 40. Joshi committed suicide in her flat in Versova, Mumbai by slitting her throat with a kitchen knife in the bathroom. She was living with her friend Madhu Bharti in her Mumbai flat. She recorded the dying statement as a video message to her friend Pushpa Parmar, where she accused Dr. Vijay Sharma, a cosmetic surgeon and "many married men" as responsible for her decision to commit suicide.

Similar to many aspiring actors who reach Mumbai with Bollywood dreams, she too met with the same fate of career failure that prompted her to take such a hasty and unfortunate act. Her death has opened the reality of exploitation of female artists in the entertainment industry. Shikha too reached Mumbai with Bollywood dreams, struggled many years, though she was not able to achieve the success she dreamt about. Her exploitation in the industry, financial problems and lack of work were cited as the reasons for her suicide.

In Dr. Vijay Sharma’s words - Joshi came to Mumbai in the early 2000s in search of work in Bollywood. She approached Dr. Vijay Sharma, who later performed a breast implant surgery on her in 2006 giving a 5-year warranty for the procedure. In 2011 she returned back asking the doctor to do the surgery again free of cost, which he didn’t. So Shikha accused him of sexually exploiting her and even peltied stones at Sharma's residence in Andheri, for which she was arrested along with her brother. She has also committed murder attempt before. Shikha was supposed to make a court appearance on 24 May 2015, but she committed suicide on 16th May.
