Sheila Ramani Biography

Sheila Ramani was a successful Bollywood actress associated with the classic era of 1950s. She is best known for her association with Chetan Anand and his brothers’ production ventures. In fact she was given the first break by none other than Chetan Anand for the movie, Taxi Driver in 1954 where she co-starred with Dev Anand and his future wife, Kalpana Karthik. The movie was a big hit and still remembered for its beautiful music by S. D. Burman. She was later seen in Chetan Anand’s Funtoosh (1956) co-staring Dev Anand. She is one among the rare Bollywood actresses from Sind. Her face resemblance with beauty queen Aishwarya Rai is often discussed in media and chats.

 

Sheila Ramani was born on March 2, 1932 in Sind, undivided India. She was crowned Miss Shimla in the early 1950s. She played the lead in a Pakistani film and later did handful of memorable roles in Bollywood cinema, predominantly in the 1950s. She was first seen in a brief role in Anand Math (1952), and the real break was given by Chetan Anand in Taxi Driver, for which she played supporting role. She has played both lead and supporting roles later.

 

After Taxi Driver, she appeared in Naukri (1954), Teen Batti Char Raasta (1953), Railway Platform (1955), Funtoosh (1956), Anokhi (1956) etc and a few unnoticed movies of 1960s. She also acted in one Sindhi film, Abana in 1958. Towards the end of her career, she got only less significant roles. She got married to Jall Cowasji, a noted industrialist, and moved to the United States. But during her last years, she returned to India and lived in Indore. She died on 15 July 2015. She lost her husband in her 50s. She has two sons in this wedlock.
