Sharath Kamal Biography
Sharath Kamal is an Indian sportsman competing in the game of table tennis. He has played for India in the 2004 Athens Olympics and has won gold in the men’s singles in the 16th Commonwealth table tennis championship at Kuala Lumpur held in 2004. The Government of India has honored him with Arjuna Award in 2004. His highest world ranking is 29 as of August 2010 and ranks first in India since 2003.
Sharath Kamal was born on 12th July 1982 in Chennai in Tamil Nadu. His full name is Achanta Sharath Kumar. His father’s name is A. Srinivasa Rao and his mother’s name is A. Annapoorna. His father and his uncle A. Muralidhara Rao used to coach him in his initial days. His father was a NIS coach and has won Andhra Pradesh State Junior Championship in singles and doubles event.
He has one brother named Rajath Kamal. He completed his schooling at PSBB School and his higher studies from Loyola College in Chennai. He married Sri Poorni. He started his training in table tennis at the YMCA in 1983 and later at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
He won the US Open table tennis men’s championship held in July 2010 in Michigan and the Egypt Open table tennis championship in 2010. He won gold medal at 2006 Commonwealth Games held at Melbourne. He partnered with Subhajit Saha and won the Men’s Doubles gold title at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held at Delhi. He played for FCI Railways and currently playing for Indian Oil Corporation.
