Sharada Ramanathan Biography

Sharada Ramanathan is a film director, cultural thinker and writer belonging to Tamil language. She made her directional debut in the 2007 Tamil film Sringaram, which was critically acclaimed and bagged three national awards and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards in different categories. The movie earned best choreography, best cinematography and best music awards at 53rd National Film Awards, while it earned Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design at state awards. The movie was screened at various international film festivals prior to theatric release. Natyanubhava (2015) and Puthiya Thiruppangal (2018) are next two releases. Natyanubhava is a documentary film.

 

Sharada Ramanathan was engaged with the fields of media and culture before her entry to films. She began her second innings with film making. As a cultural activist she was associated with many art groups. A patron of arts and culture, she played a significant role in setting up of India Foundation for the Arts. She served as the program officer of Ford Foundation.

 

Her debut film Sringaram (2007) depicts the life of a Devadasi in the early 20th century. The movie garnered great reviews from critics and was shown at many international film festivals. Thus she made a sensational debut as a film director. She was one of the jury members of the 54th National Film Awards. Her second feature film Puthiya Thiruppangal deals with child trafficking and is slated to release on October 30, 2018.

 

She also worked on one documentary film titled Natyanubhava in 2015. This documentary is an audio visual narrative on the various forms of classical dance in India today. This documentary film features several eminent dancers across the country.
