Shafi Biography

Shafi is a successful film director of Malayalam known for the blockbuster hits like Mayavi, Marykkundoru Kunjaadu, Kalyanaraman, Thommanum Makkalum and Chocolate. Chattambinadu, Pulival Kalyanam, Venicile Vyaapari, Makeup Man and One Man Show are his other major hits. He has attempted all genres of film making including romance, action and comedy and has proved successful in all genres. He made two blockbuster comedy hits with Dileep – Kalyana Raman and Marykkundoru Kunjadu. He remade his hit movie Thommanum Makkalum to Tamil starring Vikram and Asin. The movie titled Majaa was a box office failure. The director Rafi of the established film makers - Rafi Mecartin duo is his elder brother.

He worked as an assistant since 1995 before making his directorial debut - One Man Show in 2001. This comedy cum family drama is perhaps the first movie ever made on Indian screen based on a reality quiz show. The script was plotted against the Malayalam version of popular quiz show – Kaun banega Crorepathi (Ningalkkum Akam Kodeeswaran) hosted by actor Mukesh. Mukesh reprised the role once again for the movie and the fresh script was widely appreciated by viewers. The movie turned to a huge hit establishing him as a talented director.

The following year, the biggest blockbuster ‘Kalyana raman’ was released. The movie played a significant role in revitalizing the career of actor who already did two more blockbusters – Meesa madhavan and Kunji Kunan the same year. It was followed by two more comedy movies – Pulivaal kalyanam and Thommanum makkalum which proved successful at box office. He received equal appreciation for directing the romantic movie Chocolate and action movie Mayavi. His latest release - 101 Weddings was a flop at box office.
