Semmalar Annam Biography

Semmalar Annam is an Indian film actress known for playing supporting roles. She predominantly works in Tamil cinema, and has done one Malayalam-Tamil bilingual, Street Lights in 2018. Magalir Mattum, Ammani and Kurangu Bommai are her other releases in Tamil. She is best known for playing deglamorized roles of village girl, housewife etc. She won a reality show in Kalaignar TV of Tamil language. She is also a director best known for short films. During her academic years, she directed in more than 15 short films and she acted in them all too. She has also done many street plays on social awareness.

Semmalar Annam. K hails from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. She was born on 20 August 1990 as the daughter of A.V. Karuppasamy and Boovathy. She has one younger brother. She did her schooling at Krishnamal Higher Secondary School Coimbatore. She continued with her studies in her hometown, and took graduation in Visual Communication and post-graduation in Mass Communication and Journalism. To pursue a career in acting, she did an acting course later. She learnt acting and theater at Stanislavsky Acting School, Chennai, and also started directing/acting short films as a part of her academic projects.

She performed several street-plays for environmental and social causes. Many of her street plays were arranged by one of her teachers as a part of Eco Club. Semmalar's debut film Malarmathi was made in 2010, in which she portrayed a sexually abused orphan. The film won the best film and best director award at Legend 2010. She marked her feature film debut with Ammani in 2016, where she played the lead role of Sunny Immatty. The movie was directed by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan.
