Sasmita Malik Biography

Sasmita Malik is an Indian female footballer who has served as the captain of Women’s National team many times. Sasmita Malik was adjudged the Women’s player of the year 2017, and currently regarded as one of the top female players of the country. She currently plays as a left winger for India women's national football team, and has played 35 matches till now since 2007.

 

Sasmita Malik was born on 10 April 1989 in Kendrapara of Orissa. Malik was born in a small village called Aali. Her talent as a footballer was first identified and encouraged by Devendra Sharma, who currently serves as the MLA of Aali. She played many local tournaments in the city of Bhubaneswar before she joined the Bhubaneswar Sports Hostel. Her big break came in 2004 when she was a member of the team which toured China. She joined National U-19 team in 2006 and the senior team the following year. She has played 35 matches for national team till 2018 and has scored 40 goals in total. She made her debut against Iran.

 

She was a part of 2010 South Asian Games and SAFF Women's Championship winning squads back to back. She also got opportunity to lead her team for many international championships. She has also played for Rising Student Club during her early days, and currently one of the senior players of national team. She was one of India’s shining stars in the SAFF women’s football championship, and she was 27 years when she played for one of the major tournaments of her football career. Her pace and trickery on the left flank has been a constant threat to the rival defenders.
