Sandeep Kulkarni Biography

Sandeep Kulkarni is an artist from India known as an actor as well as painter. He is equally popular among Hindi and Marathi audience and works in theatre, television, and films. He won three Maharashtra State awards in the Best Actor category for Shwaas in 2004, Adhantari in 2005 and Dombivali Fast in 2006. He won the best actor award in the Nigerian Film Festival for Ek Daav Sansaracha in 2009. He has given significant contributions to uplift Marathi cinema to international platform.

Sandeep was born in Pune in a Maharashtrian middle-class family. His parents are Shrikant Kulkarni and Lata Kulkarni. He was an introvert during his school days. He expressed his thoughts through the power of sketches and colours. With the desire to become an artist he graduated from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. He learnt under leading Indian painters, Prabhakar Kolte and Atul Dodia during this time. Both these artists discovered the talent of Sandeep as well. His first exhibition was held at Jehangir Art Gallery in 1986. He completed his graduation in Fine Arts too, exactly the same year.

It was just co-incidence that he happened to meet leading theater artist, Pandit Satyadev Dubey which paved his way to become an actor as well. He spent four years in theatre and later deviated to television. 9 Malabar Hill on Zee TV, Nyay and Farz on DD Metro, Swabhiman on Doordarshan are his noted works during 1990’s. He also appeared as cop for First Kill directed by Shriram Raghavan. His debut to films happened with Mammo in 1994 where he played the role of an immigration officer who tries to help the immigrant Mammo. His role in Is Raat Ki Subaah Nahin (1996) was humorous. He played a Naxalite in Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998) and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005).
