Sadhu Kuppuswami Biography

Sadhu Kuppuswami was a Fiji Indian religious leader, who was the founder of the Sangam in Fiji. He is of Tamil Nadu origin. He earned the title "Sevaka Ratnam" in 1941. He travelled exclusively in Fiji and set up numerous schools and temples. He received help from Ramakrishna Mission to reorganise the Sangam. Swami Rudrananda put efforts to merge Sangam and Ramakrishna Mission into a single organization, which resulted in wide protests. But the founder of the Sangam, Sadhu Kuppuswami, supported Rudrananda. Sadhu Kuppuswami lived during the period, 1890–1956.

 

He was born in the village of Konoor, Tamil Nadu into a family of Naidu. He was born into a Telugu speaking family. He was the son of Govind Swamy Naidu, and was proficient in Tamil and Telugu languages. Prior to his journey to Fiji for work, he served as a policeman. He arrived in Fiji on 27 April 1912 as an indentured labourer. Later he joined in the mission of social service, and formed a South Indian Organisation with name Sangam for social activities, including set up of schools.

 

After working for 5 years in Fiji, he started sugarcane farming, and also tried his luck as a two-horse ploughman. His father was well-determined that he should follow Indian culture and tradition. In 1918 an epidemic spread across the place, and he got involved with relief activities. That’s how he earned pleasure in social activities, and later he dedicated his whole life for noble causes. He was also influenced by the Hindi missionary from India, Vashist Muni. Kuppuswami set up schools and temples across Fiji, promoting Hinduism. He died so unexpectedly on 2 August 1956 while at Fuji.
