S. Ramakrishnan Biography 
S. Ramakrishnan is the founder president of Amar Seva Sangam, Ayikudi of Tamil Nadu state. He is a social worker known for his contributions to the field of rehabilitation for persons with disabilities. In 1981, Ramakrishnan started a school for children with disabilities at Ayikudi in a small piece of land donated by Ramakrishnan's parents and was registered as Amar Seva Sangam. Now it is spread over 30 acres of land and houses with various social activities like Daycare center for children with cerebral palsy and mental retardation, Rehabilitation center for persons with physical disabilities, Vocational training center, IGNOU study centre, Siva Saraswathi Vidyala, an integrated High school, Hostel for trainees and an early Intervention Centre for the toddlers between 0-5 years. Schooling and vocational training for persons with disabilities are done free of cost.
Ramakrishnan was born in Salem on May 6, 1954. He has four siblings including one sister. His schooling was done at Thanjavur and Ayikudi. He joined Mechanical engineering course at the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore in 1971. While attending a selection interview for naval officers held in Bangalore in 1975, he injured his neck in a physical test. Following a fall, he incurred cervical spine injury that resulted in complete loss of sensations and muscle power below his neck. He went for several treatments in a couple of hospitals, Air force command hospital, Bangalore and Military Hospital, Khadki, Pune.
He later did a course of rehabilitation over the next 10 months in Pune. He was motivated by his orthopedic physician and mentor Air Marshall Dr. Amarjit Singh Chahal, during this course in Pune. Six years later, when he founded the organization, he named it after his doctor. Started in 1981 as a small organization, now it has spread to 30 acres. He married Chitra in the year 1994 and currently resides at Ayikudi.
