Roby Varghese Raj Biography

Roby Varghese Raj is a budding cinematographer associated with Malayalam cinema. He is best known for the camera work of movies such as Puthiya Niyamam, The Great Father and Captain. Thattumpurath Achuthan starring Kunchakko Boban is the most recent work. He has worked with actor Mammootty for the first two movies and Jayasurya for the third one. He is the brother of noted Malayalam character artist Rony David of Aanandham fame. Roby worked as an assistant in the industry for some time since 2010 before he got his first break through Puthiya Niyamam.

Roby Varghese Raj hails from Thrissur, Kerala. He graduated from Dr G R Damodaran College of Science. Similar to his brother, though he studied medicine, he forayed into films. His brother Rony David is also a certified doctor who chose films over medical field. While Rony chose to stay in front of camera, Roby preferred to stay behind it. Both the brothers had to patiently stay in the film industry for a while to reap success finally. After a course in multimedia, he assisted editor Vivek Harshan. But then he quit that to join an IT Company as a web developer. He tarted looking out for cinematography courses. He also completed a diploma course in cinematography from Mind Screen Film Institute, Chennai under Rajiv Menon before he turned a full-fledged cinematographer.

Roby initially worked as an assistant cinematographer with Rubaiyz Mohammed and Himman Dhammija in 2010 at Mumbai. He moved to Kochi in 2012 where he assisted Jomon T. John and Loganathan Srinivasan in 2012. He had the longest association with Jomon T John. It started with Thattathin Marayathu and went on till Charlie, and they shared a comfort zone. Puthiya Niyamam marked his debut in 2016, and he has been a part of three more movies later.
