Reetinder Singh Sodhi Biography

Reetinder Singh Sodhi is a former cricketer who has been labeled the next Kapil Dev. This talented cricketer was pretty close to the top of that long list of young Indian all-rounders who were tagged as ‘Next Kapil Dev’. But he couldn’t rise to the expectations and faded away so quickly. He had almost made to Indian cricket team, but was not fortunate enough. Though he was able to impress through his bat and ball, he couldn’t sustain for long. He played 18 ODI matches for team India, but managed to put on only 280 runs and three wickets. Now at the age of 35 plus, he is a match referee, TV expert and a philanthropist.

 

Sodhi burst on to the cricket scene with an all-round performance of 3 for 34 and a quick unbeaten 82 in the final of the Under-15 World Cup against Pakistan in the year 1996. It was a time when Kapil Dev had already retired and all-rounders like Chetan Sharma and Manoj Prabhakar were dwelling towards the end of the cricket career. This all-round performance was hailed by cricket experts as ‘next Kapil Dev’. He also played some impressive innings for cricket clubs.

 

He was born on October 18, 1980, Patiala, Punjab. Sodhi was the captain in India's U-15 team which won World cup in the 1990s. He also served as the vice-captain of U-19 team which won World cup. He made his ODI debut in the year 2000 and played 18 matches. Though regarded as a promising all-rounder for team India, he was dropped following his bad performance. After that he continued with first class cricket. He played his last match for Punjab in 2007-2008 season and currently plays the role of a match referee with BCCI and TV commentator. He is also an employee of Air India.
