Ravi Shastri Biography

Ravi Shastri is a former Indian cricketer who served as the captain of Indian cricket team. He started his international career when he was just 18 years old and played for about twelve years. Though he was originally a bowler, he became a batsman later on. He was awarded Champion of Champions in the World Championship of Cricket in Australia in 1985. Though he was a potential captain, he served as captain only for one Test match due to various reasons like injuries. His knee injury forced him to retire at the age of 31. He is a TV cricket commentator at present.

 

He was born on 27th May 1962 in Bombay. His native is Mangalore in Karnataka. He belonged to a family of strong academic origin and his father, M. Jayadratha Shastri was a doctor. He played for the Don Bosco school in Mathunga and reached the final of inter school Giles Shield in 1974. His coach when he was at school was BD Desai. Then he studied commerce at R. A. Podar College. In the final year at the junior college, he was selected to play in the Ranji Trophy for Bombay. He was 17 at that time. He married Ritu Singh in 1990 and has one daughter, Alekha.

 

He was included in the under – 19 team that was intended to tour Pakistan in 1980-81. He was included by the National Coach Hemu Adhikari. He was made as the captain of the team. However the tour was cancelled and was sent to Sri Lanka. His notable achievement in the Ranji seasons was the bowling figure of 6 for 61 against Delhi. He was called to the squad that toured New Zealand and took 3 wickets in four balls. He got seven wickets in the third test and won man of the match award.
