Ramkamal Sen Biography

Ramkamal Sen was a social worker who lived in Bengal during the late 18th century and early 19th century. But he is also known as a pro-sati activist who worked against the ideas of Raja Ram Mohan Roy. He also served as the Diwan of the Treasury, Treasurer of the Bank of Bengal and Secretary of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata, who lived during the period 1783–1844. The prominent social reformer and Brahmo Samaj leader, Keshab Chandra Sen was his grandson. Ramkamal was a member of the committee which established Hindu College in 1817. He has also authored an English-Bengali dictionary and co-authored Hitopadesha in 1820.

 

Ramkamal Sen was born on 15 March 1783 in Gariffa village. At the age of 8, he moved to Kolkata to pursue his school education. He completed education by his struggles and earned a job as well. He started off as a petty compositor in a press earning eight rupees a month. He worked with Hindustani press for many years. He joined the Asiatic Society as a clerk and rose to the position of its secretary and a member of its committee through his hard work and sincerity. He also worked in Fort William College before becoming a Dewani of the Treasury, and treasurer of the Bengal Bank, a prominent position of the society. He also served as the principal of the newly established Sanskrit College for a short period before his new designation as a treasurer.

 

Sen was also associated with social activities during his illustrious professional life. He is best known as the supporter of Sati – one of the evil systems that existed in Indian society then and he opposed Raja Ram Mohan Roy. He publicly opposed Raja Ram’s agitation against this social evil. Some of the positions held by Ramkamal Sen include - President of the Gaudiya Sabha and Indian member of the "Tea Committee" in 1834. He passed away on 2 August 1844 aged 61.
