Ramayan Tiwari Biography

Ramayan Tiwari was a Bollywood actor of classic era, best known for character roles. He was better known as ‘Tiwari’ in his public life. He did maximum films in the 1950s and 1960s, and some of his best works include - Madhumati, Yahudi, Do Bigha Zamin, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Aradhana, Mera Saaya, Kal Aaj Aur Kal etc. He has worked with almost all leading filmmakers and A-grade artists of the era. He got associated with films since early 1940s and did films till late 1980s. Thus in a career spanning to nearly 5 decades, he has donned different character roles, both positive and negative, and has done more than 100 films.

 

Ramayan Tiwari was born in the village of Maner in Patna, Bihar. He belonged to a modest farmers’ family. He was into farming before he turned active in films. During his younger days he was a freedom fighter, as a member of Azaad Hind Fauj. In the late 1930s he joined 'Prabhat Studio' doing minor jobs. One day one actor was absent while film shooting of Man Mandir was going on, and when the director offered Tiwari the role, he happily accepted it. His first credited role is Nirdosh in 1941. After that he started accepting brief roles before moving to meaty roles in the 1950s.

 

Indian cine industry had just flourished in, when he turned busy with films. Later he appeared in many hit movies of top directors of the era like Bimal Roy, Raj Kapoor, Raj Khosle etc. He continued acting till late 1980s. Throughout his life since early 1940s, he closely worked with Hindi cinema.
