Ramaranjan Mukherji Biography

Ramaranjan Mukherji was an Indian writer, academician and Indologist, who studied about Indian culture, history, languages and literature. He served as chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, which stood for Sanskrit literature. For his contributions towards the field of education and research works, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010. He passed away the same year. He was also a recipient of Hiroshima Peace Award, Government of India Certificate of Honour and Viswa Bharati Award during his lifetime.

 

Ramaranjan Mukherji was born on 1 January 1928 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He completed his studies in Sanskrit from the University of Calcutta, followed by PhD from the same university. He also completed Doctor of Literature from the Jadavpur University later. He started his career as a lecturer at Calcutta University. Later he also taught at Jadavpur University in Sanskrit department. Joined as a lecturer, he became Head of the Department. Under his tenure, DSA Sanskrit was also established.

 

He was appointed as the vice chancellor of the University of Burdwan in year 1970. He served in this position till 1984. For the last three years before his retirement he served as vice chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University. He was the president of the Association of Indian Universities, and also served as a committee member of several educational associations.

 

He published several books, including his research works and research works. Imagery in poetry: an Indian approach, Corpus of Indological Studies, Global Aesthetics and Sanskrit Poetics, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and Vyaktiviveka of Rajanaka Mahimbhatta are among his notable works. Mukherji died on 13 March 2010 due to old age related issues, soon after Padma Shri awards were announced.
