Rajni Basumatary Biography

Rajni Basumatary is a multifaceted personality from Assam. She is a film director, screenwriter and actress. She has also appeared in a few Bollywood films. She is best known for playing Priyanka Chopra’s mother in Mary Kom (2013). She was also seen in Bollywood comedy film, 'The Shaukeens'. In Assamese films, she is also known as a director. In 2014 she made her directorial debut with Assamese film, Raag which fared well at box office. Hindustani music was the main theme of the movie. She produced and scripted the highly acclaimed Assamese film, Anurag.

She was born in Rangapara, Assam. She was born into a big family, where she is the youngest of nine siblings. Her father was a land-cultivator and a Church pastor. She did her schooling and junior college in her hometown. Later she graduated in Assamese Literature from Handique Girls’ College, Guwahati. She also completed Diploma in International Airlines and Travel Management from Guwahati Institute of Management. She moved to Delhi in 1995 and since then she is settled there. She is married to Shirish Jain, an IPS officer. The couple has two children.

She marked her Bollywood debut with 2013 biopic film, Mary Kom, and was also seen in 'The Shaukeens'. She scripted and produced Assamese film ‘Anurag’ which won 7 state awards. In 2014 he ventured into film director. Her debut film, Raag starred Adil Hussain and Zerifa Wahid in the lead roles. Kenny Basumatary of Local Kung Fu also played a pivot role in the film. Through the film she tried to explore the complexity of human situations .The movie faced controversies when it was pulled off the theatres to make room for a Bollywood film, while Raag was doing well at box office. Rajini has also acted in a few Assamese films.

She did a cameo in the film Shuttlecock Boys (2011) directed by Hemant Gaba. She also plays a country bar owner in the upcoming film III Smoking Barrels directed by Sanjib Dey.
