Raasi (actress) Biography

Raasi is a noted actress of South Indian cinema, mostly associated with Tamil, Telugu and Kannada movies. Started with child roles, she moved to adult roles in the 1990s. She played the childhood of Revathy in Malayalam classic - Kakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal in 1988, and was seen aside Kaveri for the evergreen song – Kannaam Thumpi Poramo. Later she started with supporting roles and slowly moved to heroine roles in the late 1990s. She was often seen as a glamorous girl onscreen and has been one of the most sought heroines of Telugu film industry in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She was created by the name Mantra in many movies.

In 1996, she starred against Arun Vijay in Priyam. It was her first movie as heroine and her debut to Tamil film industry. Earlier she has done supporting roles in the 1990s. She worked with Arun Vijay later in movies like Ganga Gowri. She briefly appeared in movies like Aditya 369, Palnati Pourusham and Bala Gopaludu before bagging her lead role in Priyam. Since then she regularly appeared in Tamil movies. She played female lead opposite Prabhu in Thedinen Vanthathu in 1997. Same year she played female lead opposite Ajith in Rettai Jadai Vayasu, and the movie was a box office hit.

She got offers from Telugu film industry as well. She shared screen space with Jagapati Babu and Ravali in the Telugu remake of Tamil hit - Poove Unakkaga. Later she regularly appeared in Telugu movies. She played the vamp in Nijam, which earned her positive reviews followed by Subakanshalu – one of her best characters up-to-date. She shed almost 15 kilos to accept the challenging role of Nijam. She also did Sriramachandrulu, opposite Rajendra Prasad. After a small break she is back to films and Tamil film – Vaalu is her latest release.
