R. Muthuraman Biography

R. Muthuraman was an Indian film actor who appeared in films of Tamil language. He dominated the Tamil film industry in 1960s and 1970s. Due to his versatile acting skills, his fans affectionately called him as Navarasa Thilakam.

He was born in the year 1929 and his family had no connection with the film industry. His father was an advocate and his uncle was a police officer. However he had great interest in fine arts and movies from his younger days and wanted to work in the film industry. In his younger days, he has worked as a stage actor and has performed in many dramas. But his family did not support his views and he was compelled to take up the government job.

He completed his intermediate course in 1947 and then joined Gemini Studios in an administrative job. In 1952 he was found out by the wife of the director Ilangovan who thought his good looks will make him an actor. In 1957, he got his first chance to become an actor. Then he played major roles in many films and had acted in more than 100 films in his acting career both in lead roles and supporting roles.

He had worked with almost all the popular heroines of his days including Jayalalitha, Devika, Kanchana, etc. Some of the films that he has acted include Pokkiri Raja, Nenjil Ore Aalayam, Ethir Neechal, Kaadhalikka Neramillai, Guru, Dheerga Sumangali, Avalum Penn Thaane, Nathayil Muthu, Suryakanthi, Karnan, Server Sundaram, Kaadhalikka Neramillai, Kalyana Parisu, Paar Magale Paar, Karpagam, Avalukkendru Oru Manam, Ooty Varai Uravu, Major Chandrakanth, Ellorum Nallavare, Bama Vijayam, Naan, Thiruvilayadal, Maanavan, Sivandha Mann, etc.

His wife’s name is Sulochana. He had four children and his youngest son is Karthik Muthuram who is a popular actor in Tamil language and is also a politician. In 1983 during one of his film shooting at Udhagamandalam, he died while jogging. He was 53 years old at that time.
