Preetha Jayaraman Biography

Preetha Jayaraman is a noted cinematographer associated with south Indian films. She is the niece of P. C. Sreeram, the acclaimed cinematographer of Indian film industry. In fact the work of her uncle influenced her a lot to follow his footsteps and leave a mark of her own in the field of cinematographer. Currently her name is listed among the successful female cinematographers of the country. Apart from feature films, she has also done documentaries, short films and ad films. She got initial recognition through Prakash Raj starrer Abhiyum Naanum in 2008, and since then she is frequently associated with him, for his movies.

Preetha hails from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She is one among the few women who have chosen cinematography as their career. Her professional career began in the year 2003 with Knock Knock, I'm Looking to Marry, and 2007 film Kannamoochi Yenada marked her film debut. Abhiyum Naanum, released the following year brought her to limelight. Aakasamantha, Gouravam, Oggarane, Un Samayal Arayil, Boxer (2015 film – Kannada), The Fakir of Venice and Tadka are her other works. She was showered with accolades for her work in Abhiyum Nanum, the film which received positive reviews from critics too.

Preetha started off with taking photographs as a childhood hobby. Slowly she got influenced by this art, as well as her uncle’s work in movies. She enrolled at Film Institute, Chennai where she completed her graduation in cinematography. She worked with Sreeram for five years as an assistant in many movies, including Kurudhi Punal and Maymadham. She realized that it was tough to get a break in the industry and that she will have to prove herself. Then she did a documentary film Asli Azaadi on the surviving women freedom fighters, followed by a few short films and ad films, and finally turned a full-fledged cinematographer.
