Piya Sorcar Biography

Piya Sorcar is a social entrepreneur and researcher, currently settled in US. She is the daughter of the famous laser documentary maker and animator Manick Sorcar, best known for the animation films based on Indian characters, the most popular one being - Deepa & Rupa: A Fairy Tale from India. Piya Sorcar is the founder and CEO of TeachAIDS, which gives HIV education. She is also a lecturer at Stanford University. She is the granddaughter of great Indian magician - Pratul Chandra Sorcar. P. C. Sorcar Jr is her uncle. Her cousins Mumtaz Sorcar and Moubani Sorcar are noted Bengali actresses while Maneka Sorcar are now carrying forward the tradition of magic, performing aside her uncle P. C. Sorcar Jr.

 

She was born in Colorado, United States in the year 1977. She was a part of Deepa & Rupa: A Fairy Tale from India, one of the earliest animation films made by her father. She was a live actor of the film who played the title role – Rupa. She received a nomination at Emmy Awards for this role, while the animation film was shown at several international film festivals and won awards at Chicago International Film Festival.  

 

TeachAIDS is a nonprofit social enterprise that develops global HIV prevention education technology products. She was a founding member of this organisation started in the year 2009. Clifford Nass, Shuman Ghosemajumder and Ashwini Doshi were its co-founders. Piya currently serves as the CEO of this organization. It performs globally and its software in use in more than 70 countries. Voice of celebrities from each region are incorporated while the development of the software. In 2011 her name was listed in MIT Technology Review’s TR35 list of the top 35 most innovative people in the world under 35.
