Padmarani Biography

Padmarani, also spelled as Padma Rani was a veteran actress associated with Gujarati and Hindi entertainment industry. She was associated with both movies and television. She has played character roles in a few Bollywood movies like Parivar (1968), Veer Ghatotkach (1970), Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), Dil (1990) and Zaalim (1994). Started her career in Gujarati film industry in 1961, she spent more than 5 decades in the industry and acted in more than 200 Gujarati films. Unfortunately she died exactly on her 79th birthday following complications in her lungs caused by a viral fever. She passed away most recently on 25th January 2016.

 

She was born in Pune, Maharashtra on 25 January 1937. Her father, Bhimrao Bhosle was a barrister. Noted actress Sarita Joshi is her younger sister. Thus she is the aunt to Ketki Dave and Purbi Joshi, famous television artists. Padmarani was married to Namdar Irani. Noted actress Daisy Irani is her daughter. Both the sisters were associated with theatre since younger days. She along with her sister Sarita Joshi was spotted by Faredun Irani, father of Aruna Irani, while performing for a stage play. She got married to Namdar Irani, uncle of of Aruna Irani at the age of 18. He was a theatre director.

 

She has been one of the leading theatre artists in the 1950s and 1960s and she has performed over 6000 stage shows. She played lead role in the plays - Baa Retire Thai Chhe, Baa E Maari Boundary, Kevda Na Dankh, Saptapadi, Chandarwo, 5 Star Aunty and Vachan. Amari To Arjee Baki Tamari Marjee was her last stage play. Janamtip (1969), Patli Parmar (1978), Gangasati (1979), Lohini Sagaai (1980), Kasumbi No Rang, Shamal Shah No Vivah and Bhagat Peepaji (1980) are some of her Gujarati films. She played the role of Aamir Khan’s mother in Dil.
