Pa. Ranjith Biography

Pa. Ranjith is a highly acclaimed young film director and screenwriter associated with Tamil cinema. Made his directorial debut with 2012 cult romantic comedy film Attakathi, he repeated success with his next movie, Madras, a political drama. He received SIIMA Award for Best Director for this movie. His upcoming movie is Kabali, one of the much awaited projects of the year, as it stars Rajinikanth in the lead role. Radhika Apte plays the female lead. He worked as an assistant director in the industry since 2006 before his film debut as an independent director.

Ranjith was born in Karalapakkam, a village belonging to Chennai district. He graduated from Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai. His travels from home to college have inspired him to weave many stories, which he scripted later.  Ranjith joined the film industry as an assistant director under Shiva Shanmugam in 2006, followed by N. Linguswamy and Venkat Prabhu. Ranjith was introduced to a newcomer producer C. V. Kumar in 2011 by a mutual friend, Mani. He convinced the producer and thus Ranjith got his first film - Attakathi, as an independent film maker. Made on a moderate budget the movie went on to become a big hit and Ranjith was praised for his directorial skills. The film starred Dinesh, Nandita and Iyshwarya Rajesh in the lead roles.

He signed the second movie, Madras, which proved to be a major breakthrough of his career. The film gathered positive reviews from all corners and it starred Karthi and Catherine Tresa in lead roles. For his all three Tamil projects, the music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan. He has also started the pre-production of a movie with Suriya playing the lead role.
