Om Raut Biography

Om Raut is an award winning film director who makes Hindi and Marathi language films. He is best known for directing Marathi movie - Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush in 2015 which earned him Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. The film opened to critical acclaim and was a box office hit. He has also produced films like City of Gold (2010) and Haunted – 3D. Currently he is working on the Bollywood project, 'Taanaji - The Unsung Warrior', starring Ajay Devgan and the movie is slated to release later this year. In 1993 he has appeared in one movie, Karamati Coat. However he later concentrated on to film production and direction fields.

 

Om Raut was born on December 21, 1981 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was raised in Mumbai & New York. His father Bharatkumar Raut, is a senior journalist, author and Rajya Sabha member. He has links to cine world, as his mother, Neena Raut is a National Award winner film and TV producer. He is the grandson of J.S. Bandekar, an award winning documentary film maker and editor. Rather than writings, politics and journalism, Om took mother’s footsteps and landed in the film industry as an actor and later switched over film production and direction.  

 

During his childhood days, he has appeared in theatre plays and a few TV ads too. He made his film acting debut with the lead role in Karamati Coat (1993), and the film was appreciated globally, though it went unnoticed in Indian cine scene. Later he completed his engineering studies and also filmmaking course from Syracuse University, New York. He started working as a writer and director for MTV Networks, New York, and later moved back to India. City of Gold in 2010 was his first film as a film producer.
