Ogirala Ramachandra Rao Biography

Ogirala Ramachandra Rao was an Indian artist associated with Telugu cinema. He gained fame as an actor, music director and musician, who played multiple musical instruments. He started his career as an actor, and later turned music composer. He composed music for early talkies in Telugu cinema, and was fully active in the field in 1940s and 1950s. In 1939 he marked his debut as a playback singer and music composer through the movie, Malli Pelli and later he concentrated towards composing music only. He played harmonium and other music instruments.

 

As a music composer some of his noted works include – Vishwamohini, Parvati Kalyanam, Swargaseema, Mugguru Maratilu, Yogi Vemana, Gunasundari Katha, Raksharekha, Paramanandayya Shishyula Katha, Peddamanushulu, Ramadasu etc. He passed away in 1957 at the age of only 51, and at his career peak during his glorious years in Telugu cinema. His last work, Ramadasu was posthumously released in 1964. As a playback singer, he is best remembered for the movie, Bejawada Rajaratnam.

 

Ogirala Ramachandra Rao was born on 10 September 1905 at Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Ogirala Janardhana Sharma and Subbamma were his parents. He started his career as an actor in the late 1930s but ended up as a music director and singer. He started his career as an actor in Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam (1939). He played the supporting role of Lord Shiva in this film. Malli Pelli released the same year marked his debut as a music composer in the industry. He had an early death in the mid-1950s, and his family later settled in Hyderabad. He had one son and one daughter, and both followed their father’s path and turned singer-musicians.
