Nalan Kumarasamy Biography

Nalan Kumarasamy is a talented director and screenwriter of Tamil Cinema, who makes new-wave movies. His debut movie - Soodhu Kavvum in 2013 earned him huge appreciation from critics. His next two movies – X and Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum are slated to release this 2015. Apart from direction, he has also done a few cameo roles for Tamil movies like Jigarthanda, Pizza and Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru. He is closely associated with actor Vijay Sethupathi and has worked with him for movies like Pizza and upcoming Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum. Malayalam sensation Madonna Sebastian of Premam fame is to debut Tollywood with this movie.

Nalan Kumarasamy belongs to Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was associated with business, event management and real estate business before the idea of film making came into his mind. He heard about Naalaya Iyakunar and made a short called ‘Oru Padam Edukkanum’ about a movie maker with a deadline. He went on to make seven more short films and ‘Nenjukku Neethi’ made him the ultimate winner of the first season. In 2013, his first full-length movie was released - Soodhu Kavvum and the rest is history. Screenplay was also written by himself. The movie was screened at Zurich Film Festival and was a huge blockbuster at Tamil Box office. Now Nalan is counted among the list of new directors associated with new-wave cinema. He has also done cameo appearances for a few movies.

He is one among the 11 directors of the experimental film – X –Past is present, which is slated to release this year. The movie was premiered as the opening film of the 2014 South Asian International Film Festival this year. Actress Swara Bhaskar acted in his segment of the movie.
