Nabendu Ghosh Biography

Nabendu Ghosh was a noted writer of Bengali who was popular as a screenwriter of Hindi movies as well. He has also written stories of a few Hindi movies like Baap Beti, Shatranj and Raja Jani. As a screenwriter, his classic Hindi movies are - Sujata, Bandini, Devdas, Majhli Didi, Abhimaan and Teesri Kasam. He has directed 4 movies towards the end of his career like Trishagni (1988) and has also served as assistant director for the movie, Parineeta in 1953.

He won National award for best director for the movie, Trishagni and Filmfare Best Screenplay Award for Majhli Didi (1969). He won BFJA Award for Best Screenplay twice for Majhli Didi (1969) and Teesri Kasam (1967). Screenplay of Do Anjaane gave him Film World Award for Best Screenplay. Bankim Puraskar from the Bangla Academy, Amrita Puraskar, Bimal Mitra Puraskar and Haraprasad Ghosh Medal from Bangiya Sahitya Parishad are other major awards received by him. As a writer, he has published 26 novels and 14 collections of short stories. His elder son Shubhankar Ghosh is a filmmaker, while daughter Ratnottama Sengupta, is a noted journalist.

Nabendu Ghosh was born March 27, 1917 in Dhaka. He joined theatre as an actor at the age of 12. He became a popular dancer who dances in Uday Shankar style. He joined government service and lost the job for writing Dak Diye Jaai, set against the Quit India Movement. But this novel gained attention and listed his name among progressive young writers in Bengali literature. He soon reached Kolkata. After partition, Urdu was declared the state language of East Pakistan. Bengali language and literature too were banned which prompted Ghosh to join Bimal Roy and Bombay Talkies in 1951. Ghosh has written on all historical upheavals of 1940s including partition, riots and famine.
