N. S. Ramaswamy Biography

N. S. Ramaswamy was an engineer, educationist, management academic and writer. He was popularly known as Cartman Ramaswamy. He was the founder director of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, and also founded the NGOs, ‘Centre for Action, Research and Technology for Man, Animal and Nature’ and ‘Indian Heritage Academy’. He was also the founder chairman of the group of educational institutions, Adarsh Vidya Kendra. For his contributions towards society, philanthropic activities and towards the field of education, government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 2006. He was the only National Professor of Management ever in the country.

 

His full name is N. Srinivasa Iyer Ramaswamy. He was born on 2 March 1926 in Puthur, Thrissur district, Kerala. His father N. R. Srinivasa Iyer was an Indian Police Service officer and the former Inspector-General of Police of Kerala. He graduated from Kochi, and then moved to Chennai to complete his engineering degree. In those days Maharaja's College Kochi, where he completed graduation was affiliated to the University of Madras. During his engineering days at Chennai he was active in students’ politics. He also served positions such as secretary and president of the College Union. His advanced studies were completed in many institutions in Europe and US.

 

After completion of studies he returned to India. He began his professional career as a faculty at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in 1952. He later rose to professor rank, thus becoming the first professor of management in Indian university system. He then taught at National Institute of Industrial Engineering and served as its director as well. He was the first director of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. After retiring in 1983, he continued with his teaching activities.
