Mukul Sinha Biography

Mukul Sinha was a well-known human rights activist and a lawyer from Kolkata. He was a trained physicist, and a trade union leader too. He was the co-founder and president of Jan Sangharsh Manch, and was a vocal critic of Narendra Modi. Sinha died from lung cancer on 12 May 2014, and his dead body was donated to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for cancer research. He was married to Nirjhari Sinha and his son Pratik, runs an online news portal, altnews.in. He was posthumously awarded Bhagirath Human Rights Award (BHRA) by the Bhagrirath Memorial Fund Committee. He had a brief stint in politics, and owned a political party, New Socialist Movement.

 

Mukul Sinha was born in Kolkata in 1951. He graduated from IIT Kanpur in Physics and pursued his doctoral degree from Physical Research Laboratory. He got involved with social activism when some of the employees of the institute were expelled by the management in 1978. He organized the workers to fight for their rights, and also founded an employee’s organization, FEARDETI. But he lost his job in 1979. In 1988 he completed his law studies and began practising at Gujarat High Court in 1989. He co-founded Jan Sangharsh Manch in 1990, and got fully involved with socialist movement.

 

As a social activist, he worked towards the welfare of lower sections of the society and workers. He got justice for the families of victims of "fake encounters" in Gujarat during the infamous 2002 riots and his works in Manipur are equally remembered. He founded political party New Socialist Movement in 2007 and has unsuccessfully contested state assembly elections twice, first time as an independent candidate and second time as a representative of his party.
