Muktha Srinivasan Biography

Muktha Srinivasan is a veteran Tamil film director associated with the field since late 1940s. He is also known as a film producer and writer. A great reader, currently he runs a public library at his garage. He is one of the co-producers of Tamil cult classic directed by Mani Ratnam – Nayagan (1987). He has directed nearly 50 films, and published 55 fiction and non-fiction works in Tamil and English, which include – novels, short story collections, essays, translations, treatises, historical, biographical and philosophical expositions. He is credited to introducing director Visu, lyricist Vali and actress Devika to silver screen. He also exposed the real acting potential of Mouli through Sooryakanthi.

Muktha Srinivasan is the screen name of Venkatachary Srinivasan, born on 31 October 1929 at Manapuram, Tanjore District, Tamil Nadu. He entered the film industry in 1947, as Senior Assistant to T. R. Sundaram. His first assignment was to coach artists, dialogue delivery. He has worked with all major artists of late 1940s and 1950s. He also worked as an assistant of K. Ramnoth and Malayalam director Sethu Madhavan. In 1957, he made his directorial debut through - Mudhalali, a box office hit, followed by Paanjali, Naalu Veli Nilam, Thamarai Kulam, Odi Viliyadu Paapa etc.

In 1961 he entered into film production with the film – Panithirai starring Gemini Ganesan, B. Saroja Devi, K. A. Thangavelu and T. S. Balaiah in lead roles. The movie was directed by Srinivasan himself. Since then he was associated with film scene as a producer and director. He also joined hands with many production companies which produced and distributed Tamil films.  He was one of the founding members of Tamil Film Producer Council and served the position of its President also.
