Mohan Gokhale Biography

Mohan Gokhale was an Indian actor who was associated with films, theatre and television of Marathi and Hindi language. He was born in an artistic family who started a drama company 100 years ago. Acclaimed theatre artist cum film actor Vikram Gokhale is his elder brother. He was the younger son of acclaimed theatre artist and actor - Chandrakant Gokhale. Kamlabai Gokhale and Durgabai Kamat who are credited to the first heroines and female artists on Indian silver screen are his maternal grandmother and great-grandmother respectively. As a film actor, he is best known for the art movies - Sparsh, Bhavni Bhavai and Mirch Masala. He has also been associated with television and has also appeared in mnay television ads of 1980s.

 

Mohan Gokhale was born in Pune, Maharashtra. As he was born in a theatre family, acting was in his blood and he was associated with theatre since his younger days. He also participated in many school and college level competitions winning many prizes. Gokhale debuted on television in Shwetambara and became popular through the Doordarshan serial, Mr. Yogi. It was directed by Ketan Mehta and Ashutosh Gowarikar’s What’s your rashee is inspired from this television serial when Mr. Yogi – a graduate from US, meets 12 girls and tries to select one of them as his bride in India.

 

Mohan Gokhale was married to the noted Marathi actress Shubhangi Sangvi, and the couple had two kids. He died at a comparatively young age of 45 in Chennai on 29 April 1999 while he was shooting the bi-lingual movie of Kamal Hassan – Hey Ram. Amol Palekar's Kairee was his last release.
