Mayookha Johny Biography

Mayookha Johny is an Indian track and field athlete who hails from Kozhikode, Kerala. She is associated with long jump and triple jump, and a national record holder in triple jump too. She is the first Indian woman to cross the fourteen-metre mark, and she currently holds the national record with a mark of 14.11 m. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the triple jump and 2014 Commonwealth Games in the long jump, and also represented her nation in many international events. She won a bronze medal in the third and final leg of the Asian Athletics Grand Prix in Wujiang, China, becoming the first Indian woman to breach 14 m mark.

 

Mayookha was born on 9 August 1988 in Koorachund, Kozhikode. Her father M. D. Johny was a bodybuilder and the former title holder of Mr. Bombay. Mayookha won gold in long jump and triple jump (12.38 m) in under-20 category in 2006 at Kerala State Athletic Championship held at Thrissur. She represented Kannur. She participated in Asian games for the first time in 2010, where she finished at position 7 in long jump event. Her performance was noticed at 2011 National Games of India, and since then she registered some of the best wins in National level athletics for the two events in which participated.

 

She was qualified for the finals of 2011 World Championships in Athletics, though she couldn’t perform better in the finals. She finished at position 9. She was only a third Indian to be qualified for the finals. In 2012 Asian games, she unsuccessfully attempted for qualifying to Olympics. Same year her performance in triple jump held at Dillingen, Germany got noticed.
