Mamta Prabhu Biography

Mamta Prabhu is an Indian sportswoman who plays the game of table tennis. She is a part of the Indian women table tennis team and her highest world ranking is 356 as of July 2010 and she ranks fourth in India level.

 

Mamta was born on 1st March 1983 in Thane in Maharashtra. Her father’s name is Ashok Prabhu and her mother’s name is Sunita Prabhu. She completed her schooling at S.E.S. High School at Thane. She joined Mulund Colllege of Commerce and got her bachelor’s degree in Commerce and then from Welingkar College she got her post graduation diploma in Management.

 

She started playing table tennis at her age of 8 and seeing her passion for the game her parents tried to enroll her and her brother in the table tennis club near their house. But as she was not even the height of the table, she could not be admitted. However she used to accompany her brother to the club though she was not allowed to play.

 

Finally one day she got admission in the table tennis club and got to play a local district match. Dilip Hate was her first coach who helped to shape her career. She was selected to be trained under the Chinese Coach at Ajmer by the Petroleum Table Tennis Academy when she was 12 years old. She was then coached by Kamlesh Mehta.

 

She is working as the Marketing Manager at Dena Bank and is also the brand ambassador for the bank. She appears in a commercial of the bank with the Indian sport uniform. She initially played for Central Railways and later started representing Dena Bank.

 

She participated in the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 and Asian Games 2010 at Guangzhou and was a part of the Commonwealth Indian team that won silver medal for India. She was beaten in quarterfinals in the Asian Games. She also played in the 48th World Table Tennis Championship in Shaghai in China and in the Chile Open and American Open in 2006 and in the Golden Racket tournament held in Vietnam.

 

She represented India in the Indian Open ITTF Protour at Indore and in the 19th Asian Table Tennis Championship in Lucknow. She represented Maharashtra A team in the 72nd Senior National and Inter-State Table Tennis Championship held at Kolkata. She won gold medal in the Indian Open Table Tennis tournament at Shillong and holds the record for winning the Maharashtra State Championships for 6 years consecutively.
