Majid Majidi Biography

Majid Majidi is an Iranian film director, film producer, and screenwriter who most recently made one Hindi film, Beyond the Clouds in 2018. The movie marked the acting debut of Ishaan Khatter, just before Dhadak gets a theatric release. The movie also starred south Indian actress Malavika Mohanan in a lead role. The movie was released in Hindi and English languages. The film released in India on April 20, 2018 to mixed reviews. Though the direction and screenplay were criticized, the performance of lead pair earned appreciation.

Majid Majidi was born on 17 April 1959 in Tehran, Iran. He was born into a middle-class family. He joined amateur plays at the age of 14. His passion to stage plays prompted him to study at the Institute of Dramatic Arts in Tehran. In the 1980s, he played brief roles in films, and marked his directorial debut in the year 1992. His maiden movie was Baduk. In 1998 his directorial venture, Children of Heaven became the first Iranian film to be nominated by the Academy awards in foreign language category. Since then he continued directing movies. Before he made his first full-length film, he also directed a few short films and documentaries, notably Explosion, Hoodaj, Examination Day etc.

Even after making full-length films, he continued making short films and documentaries. Rezae Rezvan, Najva ashorai, Peace, Love, and Friendship, Barefoot to Herat etc are a few more documentary films which he directed. The Song of Sparrows, Muhammad, Baran etc are among his noted Iranian feature films, which he scripted and directed after Children of Heaven. In 2018 he made his first Hindi film, Beyond the Clouds. It was made in English and Hindi.
