Mac Mohan Biography

Mac Mohan was a legendary actor of Bollywood silver screen known for portraying ‘Bad man’ roles onscreen. One of the most popular villains in the 1970s and 1980s, he played signature roles in movies like Don, Karz, Satte Pe Satta, Zanjeer, Rafoo Chakkar, Shaan and Khoon Pasina. He has worked with Big B in quite a few action movies in the 1970s and 1980s. He played sidekick or assistant to antagonist in most of his film roles. Samba – the sidekick of Gabbar Singh in Sholay is perhaps the most memorable role he played onscreen. He passed away in Mumbai on 10 May 2010, aged 72. He has acted in 218 movies. Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge in 2010 was his last movie. Actress Raveena Tandon is his niece. His daughter Manjari Makijany is also associated with Bollywood as set designer.

 

Mohan was born in Karachi of present-day Pakistan and was brought up in Lucknow. Actor Sunil Dutt was his classmate. He reached India to become a cricketer, but landed into the world of acting and theatre. He also joined Filmalaya School of Acting in Mumbai to learn the essence of acting, before he joined Bollywood. He started his Bollywood journey as an assistant director to Chetan Anand, who gave him the first break through Haqueeqat in 1964. Since then he acted in more than 200 movies belonging to Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Haryanvi, Sindhi, Gujarati and Marathi languages.

 

His real name Mac was often used as character name in many of his movies, perhaps the only actor of Bollywood cinema. Soch, Stumped, Insaan, Pehchaan, Luck By Chance and Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge are some of his last appearances.
