M. Sukumar Biography

M.Sukumar is a noted cinematographer associated with south Indian film industry. He predominantly works is Tamil film industry, and is best known for the works of Kaaki Sattai, Myna, Kumki, Sketch, Bhairavaa, Dharma Durai, Maan Karate etc. He handled camera for one song of Akshay Kumar starrer Bollywood film, Holiday and also one song for Kokki, which marked his debut in 2006. Prior to his entry as cinematographer in the industry in the mid-2000s, he worked as a still photographer of Vikram for many of his movies. He is the younger brother of cinematographer, M. Jeevan.

M.Sukumar hails from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He started his professional career by assisting his elder brother M. Jeevan in films since 1995. Very soon he entered into the Tamil film industry as a photographer. It was during his graduation years when he started assisting his brother as a cameraman, and 1997 movie Minsarakanavu was one of his early works. He continued working as an assistant photographer in films including Minnale (2001), Samurai (2002) and King (2002), and managed to achieve a friendly relationship with Vikran who had just began a successful career in the industry after a few hits. He worked as the main photographer for Vikram’s films including Dhool (2003) and Majaa (2005).

It was director Prabhu Solomon who suggested Sukumar to step into cinematographer’s shoes, and offered him to shoot a song for his film, Kokki. As his brother Jeeva was handling the camera work, he was reluctant to accept the offer. However when Jeeva got busy with other projects, he accepted the proposal. Later too, the brothers have interchanged many of their projects for convenience. Prabhu Solomon offered him many films including Laadam (2009), Mynaa (2010) and Kumki (2012), which helped him to establish as a cinematographer in the industry.
