M. R. Gopakumar Biography

M. R. Gopakumar is a Malayalam film actor known for character roles. Perhaps he is best known for the supporting role of National award winning film Vidheyan, directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The portrayal of a suppressed slave earned him Special Jury Award at State awards 1993. The movie bagged National award for the lead actor, Mammootty who portrayed the negative shades of a feudal lord. He became the first Indian actor to be featured in Steven Spielberg film. He got opportunity to work in 1996 movie, ‘A lost world’ and he was spotted by Spielberg’s Indian casting agent from Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s camp. His portrayal of Thommy in Vidheyan impressed the casting director to offer him a role in a Hollywood film.

 

He was an established theatre artist before his entry to movies and television. He has been regularly featured in several Doordarshan Malayalam serials of early 1990’s. In 1999, he received Second Best Actor award for Gopalan Nayarude Thaadi. He regularly appears in character roles in Malayalam movies since early 1990’s.  Bhoothakkannadi, Susanna, Ozhimuri, Neythukaaran, Karmayogi, Mazhanoolkkanavu, Paadam Onnu: Oru Vilapam, Thekku Thekkoru Deshathu, Vilapangalkkappuram, Nerariyan CBI, Punyam Aham, Madampi, Adaminte Makan Abu etc are his noted works. He is regularly featured in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s movies like Vidheyan, Naalu pennungal, Oru Pennum Randaanum etc. To him, Adoor is his mentor.

 

He was born and brought up in Thiruvattar, Kanya Kumari district, Tamil Nadu. He is living in Thiruvananthapuram city for more than 40 years. He came to the capital city for the first time in 1971 after the completion of graduation. He loves travelling and has visited many places. Agasthyarkoodam, the second peak of Kerala is one of his favourite destinations.
