Lilavati Singh Biography

Lilavati Singh was an Indian educator and professor of literature and philosophy. She taught at Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow. She lived during the period, December 14, 1868 – May 9, 1909. She hailed from Gorakhpur, present-day Uttar Pradesh. She was one among the first two female graduates from University of Allahabad, and has translated and edited works. She died young at the age of 40 from complications following an emergency operation. She died at US while she was on a lecture tour and her remains were buried in a churchyard in Elgin, Illinois.

 

Lilavati Singh was born in Gorakhpur on December 14, 1868 to a Christian family. Her baptismal name is Ethel Raphael. Her name is also pronounced as Lilivati Singh. She used her Indian name for her official purposes. She schooled from Miss Thoburn's boarding school and also completed a degree in English literature from the University of Allahabad in 1895. When Isabella Thoburn opened a new school, she hired her former student Lilavati Singh as a teacher in 1892. She later became the professor of literature and philosophy at Isabella Thoburn College. Following the death of Isabella Thoburn, Singh was appointed as the Vice Principal.

 

She served as the editor of a women's newspaper, Rafik-i-Niswan. She has conducted many lectures abroad in US, and other countries. She has also represented India at many conferences abroad and delivered lectures in Europe and England. She was the chairman of women's committee of the World Students' Christian Federation. She passed away on one such occasion when she went for a lecture tour to United States.
