Lijo Jose Pellissery Biography

Lijo Jose Pellissery is an upcoming director of Malayalam who shot to fame with the top grosser of Malayalam in 2013 – Amen. He has also directed two more critically acclaimed movies in Malayalam titled - Nayakan and City of God and in all these three movies, he casted Indrajith Sukumaran in one of the lead roles. His upcoming movie is Anti-Christ where both the brothers, Indrajith Sukumaran and Prithviraj Sukumaran are acting together, aside lead hero of Amen - Fahadh Faasil. It is for the second time after City of God, that he casts both the sons of Sukumaran in one movie.

Lijo was born in Chalakudy in Thrissur district. He is the son of film and theatre actor - Jose Pellissery, known for character roles. Lijo completed schooling from Carmel High School, Thrissur. Later he obtained Master’s Degree in Business Administration from IIPM, Bangalore. Then he started his career directing short films. He was one of the finalists of the PIX Short Film Festival 2007. He is deeply influenced by the works of K. G. George, Padmarajan and Akira Kurosawa. He directed his first feature Nayakan in 2010 which was praised by critics for his excellence in direction. The story revolves around around a Kathakali artist who joins hands with underworld to take revenge with those who destroyed his family. But the movie failed at box office.

City of God, released in 2011 was his second movie. This movie too was a critical success though failed to collect money at box office. ‘Amen’ released in 2013 is his masterpiece work. It became a huge success all over Kerala. Symbolisms and underlying Magical Realisms in a Christian background, beautiful photography of backwaters of Kerala and boat race rhythms of songs were the big positive points for the success of the movie. It is regarded as one of the most memorable performances of Indrajith. Lijo received best director award at Asianet film awards 2014.
