Leishangthem Tonthoingambi Devi Biography

Leishangthem Tonthoingambi Devi is a national award winning film actress from Keikhu, Manipur. She is also known by the name Tonthoi among her fans. She appears in Manipuri and Assamese movies, and has been a part of several award winning films. She is the recipient of several awards, and has also appeared in Doordarshan serials. She received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 59th National Film Awards 2011 for the Manipuri film Phijigee Mani. She played the role of Yaiphabi in the film, which bagged her the prestigious award. Tonthoi is the brand ambassador of Singju Festival, conducted annually since 2017. She received FAM's Best Actress of the Year Award for 2012. She is a recipient of two state film awards.

 

She was born on 17 October 1986 in Keikhu, Manipur. Leishangthem Ibungomacha Singh and Leishangthem Leibaklei Devi are her parents. Right from the childhood she had keen interest in performing arts. She is trained in the traditional music instrument Pena. She completed her graduation in commerce. She was also interested in sports since young, and has been a part of the University's women football team which participated in All India Women Football tournament.

 

She marked her film debut with 2006 Manipuri film Nangna Thawaini in a supporting role, playing heroine’s friend. Loibataare Ta Raju, Leipaklei, Nungshibee Kabaw Valley, Thoicha, Amamba Sayon, Eepaktuda the lake, Beragee Bomb, Pallepfam and Phijigee Mani are some of her memorable films later. She has also produced one Manipuri film, Beragee Bomb under the banner of Chingkhurakpa Arts along with her brother.

 

Manipuri film Phijigee Mani gave her the biggest recognition in the form of national award. Iche Tampha in 2017 is one of her best works in the recent times. She played lead role opposite Gokul Athokpam in this movie, and has bagged Special Jury Award at the 11th Manipuri State Film Awards 2018. Her role of Kimboi in Paokhum (2009) is also memorable. She received Special Mention Award in the 7th State Film Festival 2010 for this role. Her role in Patkee Tharo bagged Best Actor North-East Female at the Prag Cine Awards North-East 2016.
