Krishnananda Saraswati Biography

Krishnananda Saraswati was a Hindu religious saint, philospher and one of the prominent disciples of Swami Sivananda. He served as the General Secretary of the Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, established by his Guru, from 1958 until his death in 2001. He has conducted speeches extensively and has authored more than 200 religious books on yoga, metaphysics and spirituality. He was the President of the Sivananda Literature Research Institute and the Sivananda Literature Dissemination Committee. He also served as editor of Divine Life - the Divine Life Society’s monthly paper for 20 years.

His real name is Subbaraya born on 25 April 1922. He was a well-known philosopher and an exponent of Advaita Vedanta, the most influential sub-division of Vedanta. Known as a philosopher of metaphysics, epistemology and ethics, he was also a scholar of Western philosophy. He taught and practiced Yoga of Synthesis, directly learnt from his guru and thus he was one among the disciples of Swami Sivananda who propagated his philosophy and yoga techniques worldwide. As he was proficient in theology and philosophy, he was known as a jnana yogi, one among the types of Yoga.

Most of his lectures have been published by the DLS and its affiliated organisations and have been translated also. He has authored more than 50 books and 160 essays. His works include commentaries of Hindu religious books like Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. His monographs primarily included subjects of metaphysics, epistemology, and psychology. He also wrote books on Yoga and its practice. Dialogs of his interactions with other people have also been published. He died on 23 November 2001 at Shivanandanagar aged 79.
