Kishore Sahu Biography

Kishore Sahu was a film director associated with Bollywood in the early talkies and the golden era. He also excelled as an actor, wrote screenplays and produced movies as well. Many of his directorial ventures are regarded as milestones of Hindi cinema. In a career spanning to more than 4 decades, he directed 20 films and appeared in 22 films. He marked his acting debut in 1937 with the movie, Jeevan Prabhat in a parallel lead role, and he did his last film in 1982 - Vakil Babu. He made his first full-fledged film, Kunwara Baap in 1942 which was one of the winners for the BFJA - Best Indian Films Award for best film for 1943. His films – Raja, Verr Kunal, Nadiya Ke Paar, Mayurpankh, Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraye etc were big releases and highest grossers too.

 

He was born on 22 November 1915 in Rajnandgaon of present day Chhattisgarh. His father was the Prime Minister under the Raja of Raigarh. His wife’s name is Preeti, and the couple had four children. He completed graduation in 1937, and as a youth, he was drawn towards freedom struggle movement.  He was interested in writing stories since young. But he joined films as an actor before turning a screenwriter and film director. His first film, Jeevan Prabhat was released soon after graduation.

 

In 1942, he turned a director with the award winning film, Kuwara Baap. He also played lead role in the film opposite Protima Dasgupta and Anjali Devi. Since then till 1974, he directed 20 films. He also wrote scripts of his films, and also other directorial ventures like Teen Bahuraniyaan. His 1954 films Mayurpankh entered into the 1954 Cannes Film Festival. He passed away on 22 August 1980 in Bangkok, Thailand aged 64.
