Keshu Ramsay Biography

Keshu Ramsay was a film maker of 1980s associated with Bollywood, best known for horror thrillers. Since 1990s, he co-produced many Khiladi movies starring Akshay Kumar, and received success. The son of F.U. Ramsay, he is one of the famous Seven Ramsay Brothers, known for producing and directing horror movies and TV shows. Kumar Ramsay, Shyam Ramsay, Tulsi Ramsay, Arjun Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay and Kiran Ramsay are his rest 6 brothers. All the movies were directed by 7 brothers and credited as Ramsay Brothers. His horror thrillers - Hotel, Purana Mandir, Tahkhana, Veerana, Bandh Darwaza etc received a cult status over the years, and still popular among TV viewers.

Keshu Ramsay was born in 1955. His father F.U. Ramsay produced many horror films in Bollywood, and his seven sons followed the same suite. They closely worked with their father. They produced family dramas and patriotic movies during 1950s and 1960s, before he completely switched over to horror genre. His family was originally the Ramsinghanis, who ran electronics shops in Karachi and Lahore. They came to India and settled here after partition. Ramsay brothers have made approximately 32 films, and all belonging to horror category. They were low budget films with poor special effects and bad makeup, yet were well received by audience of 1980s.

The family soon after reaching India after partition set up an electronics shop at Lamington Road. But very soon they got lured by the magic of cinema. They couldn’t get success with family dramas. With 1970s, they moved to horror genre, producing slow budget B-grade films, and finally succeeded. A team of 7 brothers pioneering in horror filmmaking in the 1980s, and now regarded as the top filmmakers of this genre.

Keshu’s debut happened with the film Haveli, and he continued working with his brothers. In the early 1990s he watched the changing trend, and stopped doing horror films. Instead he produced and co-produced many action films with Akshay Kumar. He produced quite a few ‘Khiladi’ films of Akshay which include Sabse Bada Khiladi, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi, International Khiladi and Khiladi 420. He was also the producer of Khakee, Insan and Family – Ties of Blood, all belonging to Khiladi star. He suffered from a massive heart attack and died in 2010, aged only 45. His son Aryeman is a film actor.
