Keshavrao Date Biography

Keshavrao Tryambak Date, shortly called Keshavrao Date was a film and theatre personality. He was an actor and director. He worked in both silent movies and talkies. Andhalyanchi Shala was one of his noted theatric works before he joined film industry. He was a star of Prabhat Film Company and has been a part of several hit films. He appeared in legendary director V. Shantaram's Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), Navrang (1959) and Geet Gaya Patharon Ne (1964). Keshavrao directed four films, Kisise Na Kehna (1942), Andhon Ki Duniya (1947), and Maali (in Hindi -1944) and its Marathi version Bhakticha Mala the same year.

 

Date was born in a poor family in the small village of Adiware of Ratnagiri district in the year 1889. His father died when he was only 6 years old. He studied till 6th standard and later he moved to Mumbai in search of a job. He worked as a compounder for a few days. In those days he happened to see a play of Maharashtra Natak Mandali and developed an interest in theatre. Very soon he got associated with the same troupe as an actor, where he enacted a role of the adaption of Shakespeare play, Othello. The year was 1912. He started with female roles in Khadilkar`s plays.

 

The play - Andhalyanchi Shala in 1933 made him a big star and very soon he entered big screen. Amrit Manthan (1934) was his debut movie for Prabhat Film Company. Marathi film Kunku (1937) was one of his earliest noted works, followed by Shejari (1941). After appearing in several movies, he moved to direction. Though associated with several movies, theatre remained his first love. He also owned a theatre company.
