Kenny Basumatary Biography

Kenny Basumatary is an Assamese film director and actor best known for the film, Local Kung Fu, made on a very low budget of just 1 lakh Indian rupees. The movie belongs to martial arts comedy and the film starring Kenny in the lead was a box office hit. The movie marked his debut as a director and actor too. Since then he is quiet known for making low budget but entertaining movies. The movie received a Filmfare nomination for best film in the inaugural Filmfare awards (East). The movie was released in 2013.

 

In 2014 he played parallel lead in the Assamese film, Raag starring Adil Hussain and Zerifa Wahid in the lead roles. The movie with music as theme was directed by Rajni Basumatary, who played Priyanka Chopra’s mother in Mary Kom. The movie was a major success at box office. Kenny has also appeared in Bollywood film, Mary Kom, Shanghai, Phata Poster Nikla Hero and Luv Ka The End in small roles.

 

He was born and brought up in Guwahati, Assam. He was born on 9 April 1980. Though he joined Computer Engineering in the prestigious IIT Delhi, he discontinued his studies. Later he worked as newsreader for an Assamese News channel. He wanted to pursue an entertainment career and for the same reason he moved to Mumbai to attend film scripting workshop. It happened in 2009. His script on martial arts couldn’t get earn good marks.

 

While at Mumbai he started appearing in TV commercials, TV serials and even Bollywood movies in small roles. He also published one book - Chocolate Guitar Momos in 2011. He moved back to Guwahati and worked on his debut film, Local Kung Fu which proved to be a major success. The movie gave him a big break to Assamese Film industry as a budding actor and director.
