Kenan Malik Biography

Kenan Malik is an Indian-born British writer, an academic author, and broadcaster, associated with the subjects - neurobiology and the history of science. Man, Beast and Zombie, Strange Fruit, From Fatwa to Jihad, Multiculturalism and Its Discontents and The Quest for a Moral Compass are among his famous published works. This author was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize in the year 2010. Philosophy of biology and contemporary theories of multiculturalism, pluralism and race are the major areas he focuses on. Malik has also presented shows for many radio stations and documentaries, and wrote columns for different dailies and magazines.

 

Malik was born in Secunderabad, present-day Telangana on 26 January 1960. He was brought up in Manchester, England. He completed neurobiology studies at the University of Sussex and History of Science at Imperial College, London. After studies, he worked as a lecturer at different colleges and universities and has given lectures or seminars at many prestigious universities like University of Cambridge, University of Oxford etc. In 2003, he was a visiting fellow at the University of Melbourne. Now also he is busy with his teaching profession, in the role of a Senior Visiting Fellow.

 

He presented the show Analysis and Night Waves on BBC Radio 4. He has also presented Radio 3's Arts and Ideas magazine. He has also scripted and presented numerous documentaries for different TV channels. Malik supports Humanists UK and a trustee of the free-speech magazine ‘Index on Censorship’. As a social worker, he campaigned for equal rights, freedom of expression, and a secular society. In the 1980s he was associated with Marxist ideologies and many organizations. Malik wrote for the RCP's magazine - Living Marxism.
