Kashinath Ghanekar Biography

Kashinath Ghanekar was an Indian actor associated with Marathi cinema and theatre. He is widely regarded as the first super star of Marathi theatre. He was also a dental surgeon by profession. He lived during the time period, 14 August, 1930 - 2 March, 1986 and died of a heart attack, while he was busy with his stage plays. He was only 55 years old when he passed away. Most of his prominent films and plays were made during 1950s - 1970s. His second wife Kanchan is the daughter of Marathi veteran actress Sulochana Latkar. Kanchan penned a biography titled "Nath Ha Maza".

 

Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar was born on 14 August 1930 in Chiplun, Maharashtra. His first marriage with Irawati M. Bhide, a gynaecologist and obstetrician bore no children and ended with a divorce. He later married actress Sulochana Latkar’s daughter in 1983 at the age of 53 and he died three years later. He entered the world of theatre through Marathi play, ‘Garambhicha Bapu’ which was successfully staged for many years. From there one, he established as the celebrated star of Marathi theatre. It was a time when plays enjoyed a golden period of run.

 

Kashinath Ghanekar had a great fan following during the 60s and 70s, during his peak years in both films and stage plays. Yet basically he was a stage actor. He is widely regarded as a versatile actor, donning different kinds of lead and character roles. ‘Professor Lalya’ from his popular play ‘Ashrunchi Jhali Phule’ received overwhelming response from the audience. ‘Madhuchandra’ with actress Uma Bhende was one of his biggest hits as a film actor. He also owned a dental clinic, where he treated his patients.
