Kani Kusruti Biography

Kani Kusruti is a film actress of Malayalam cinema. She is a successful model too. She gained recognition through 2009 Malayalam anthology film, Kerala Café where she appeared in the segment Island Express directed by the debutant Shankar Ramakrishnan. Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Rahman, Maniyanpilla Raju, Sukumari and Shelly Kishore also appeared in this segment. At present, Kusruti lives in Mumbai with her partner, the filmmaker and science communicator, Anand Gandhi. She is an atheist and also a rationalist.

Kani hails from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala to Jayasree AK and Maitreya Maitreyan. She was born on 12 September 1985. Both her parents are social activists and rationalists. Kani too identifies herself as a rationalist. At the age of 15, she added ‘Kusruti’ tag to her name, which means mischievous in Malayalam language. As her parents had already dropped their last names, she did so to fill the second column of her name for her SSLC exam application form. Thus Kusruti tag got permanently added to her name.

Her younger days were spent in Thiruvananthapuram, where she got introduced to the world of theatre. After schooling she moved to Thrissur. She joined Abhinaya, and marked her theatre debut with Bhagavadajjukam. She played the lead role of Vasantsena for almost 6 years since 2000. She enrolled at Thrissur Drama School in 2005, where she studied till 2007. She completed her advanced studies in theater in Paris in 2009. Once she returned from L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, she marked her debut with Kerala Café in 2009.

A Naxalite in 2010 movie – Shikar, a sex worker in 2010 movie – Cocktail – some memorable roles just followed her acting debut in films. North 24 Kaatham, Oru Indian Pranayakadha, Urumi, Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla etc are a few more. She also played a few supporting roles in Tamil films like Pisaasu.
