Kamu Mukherjee Biography

Kamu Mukherjee was a veteran Bengali actor, known for character roles. Mandar Bose in Sonar Kella and Harun in Phatik Chand, both directed by filmmaker Satyajit Ray are his most memorable character roles on Bengali screen. He has also worked with directors - Goutam Ghosh, Buddhadev Dashgupta and Arvinda Mukherjee in many Bengali films. His cameo role in Charulata was also well received. He was known to be a brilliant, yet humble actor belonging to Bengali cinema. There are some actors whose supporting roles have great impact, and an upper hand over lead actor roles, and Kamu Mukherjee was one such blessed and less-known Bengali actor.

 

Kamu Mukherjee was born on June 14 1931 in West Bengal. Kamu Mukherjee marked his screen debut with Sonar Harin in 1959 along with Uttam Kumar, Chhabi Biswas, Tarun Kumar, Kali Banerjee and Bhanu Bandopadhyay. It was followed by his brief role in Charulata, which made a deep impression in audience’s minds. For pursuing his career in acting, he approached the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. In fact Ray later groomed him as an actor through a few memorable roles he offered to Kamu.

 

His other memorable character roles include - Harun-Al -Rashid in Phatik Chand, Pritish Sarkar in Nayak, creepy goon in Hansgraj etc. Over the years he has portrayed both positive and negative roles on screen. He has appeared in around 50 movies. He was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis during his last years, and passed away on 6th December, 2003 aged 72. Goopy Bagha Phire Elo, Paar, Phera, Shatranj Ke Khilari, Joi Baba Felunath etc are a few more memorable roles he played on screen.
